Older Persons

All areas of Dublin 15 have a really good history of organising events for Older Persons, so when the Partnership took the decision to look at the needs of this group we invited Older People to tell us what events/courses/classes they would like.

Top of the list was learning about computers, to date ten groups have completed the “Introduction to Computers” course. We also provide a monthly “Computer drop-in” service. The purpose is to give short term help to solve any minor difficulties people may have who have completed courses with us.

Art and Crafts was another area where people said they would like classes. We are currently running our second class, the Adult Education Service provide us with a tutor and classes are held in Dillon House once weekly.

We are also involved with a photographic project called, “Has the Older Person abandoned fashion or has fashion abandoned the Older Person” with Draiocht’s arts officer.

Volunteer tutors for the Failte Isteach project are mainly Older Persons from Dublin 15, this project brings together new Irish and Older Persons who tutor them in English conversation. The success of this project is due in no small measure to the commitment and dedication of our wonderful volunteers.

Information events on various topics of interest to Older Persons have been held and more are planned in 2011.

The “Ageing with Confidence” and “Taking Stock” programmes for Older Persons will be delivered by Lilian during 2011. Please contact Lilian if you would like to take part in these courses.

You can contact Lilian on 8247841 or email her at lharris@bap.ie if you would like more information on Lilian’s work with Older Persons in Dublin 15.

Personal development is key work with all our project groups. The men and women’s groups, our parent and toddler groups along with our over 55’s group, all avail of some element of personal development. This includes sessions on arts and crafts, physical exercise to relaxation with social events too. Through this work we aim to combat social exclusion and empower people to be part of their community.
